Parking and Meeting Point: Yaverland Car Park - Parking Fee (support available upon request)

Join Mark and Sara to explore the landscapes and seascape of Culver Down and Yaverland Beach and experience the Biosphere of Sandown Bay Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (ANOB). With Sara you will be able to be creatively connected on the walk with natural environment and capture the sounds, sights, colours and smells through pencil art. Whilst on Yaverland Beach you will have the opportunity to be creative by using pastels, pencils, paints, to be used alongside the natural materials collected on the walk and learn to make pigments. You will also be able to enter the sand sculpture competition, and work with others to design and create your own themed sand sculpture.

With Mark you will take a 1 hour 30 minutes short but exhilarating clifftop walk up and over Culver Down, taking in the sweeping views of Sandown and Shanklin Bay, splendid views of the Bembridge coast line and stunning panoramic sea views of the Solent and Spinnaker Tower Portsmouth. You will stop and learn about Yarborough Monument, and learn that from the Napoleonic Bembridge Fort to the Second World War, Bembridge and Culver Downs have long been used for military purposes.

You will view the coastguard cottages that still remain. You may see in flight, buzzards, kestrels and peregrines as they hunt along the cliffs. The chalk soils of Bembridge and Culver Downs provide an ideal habitat for Blue Butterflies, Chalkhill, Common, Small and Adonis Blues that you may see flitting about among the grasses and flowers.

Parts of Bembridge and Culver Downs support a range of chalk grassland flowers and you may see on the walk Thyme, Bee Orchids and the eye-catching Bird’s Foot Trefoil that covers the down in a carpet of yellow at certain times of the year.
